UCU finishes second in 16th inter-varsity games

The UCU sports team rounded up a great year of great performances with a second position finish in the 16th Inter-University Games at Busoga University after scooping 18 medals across board.

We bring you a comprehensive list of the sportsmen and women who brought the medals back home.

Gold Medal winners: 

Basketball 

Final Results:

Men – UCU 58-57 Ndejje

Women – UCU 52-51 KIU

The Canons recovered from their loss in the league play-offs final to win gold in a hotly contested match against Ndejje University while the lady Canons also added to their league triumph over KCCA Leopards by beating KIU Rangers after recovering from a 30 point gap to clinch gold.

Rugby 

The UCU Shepherds maintained a perfect record to clinch gold in the Rugby category. They defeated hosts Busoga University 26 – 00 in the opening game before trouncing Kyambogo University 17 – 05 to remain indomitable in the series.

Tennis 

In the previous issue of The Standard we predicted that David Oringa and Duo would go for gold and that is exactly what they did. They beat everything and everyone on their path to retain the title they won in the 2014 East African University Games.

Chess 

The geniuses of the Ladies’ chess team beat Makerere University Business School in the final to win gold.

Netball women 

The Netball team led by Skipper Alisha Wasagali fought hard to win it late 34 – 33 against a resilient Nkumba University side to claim gold.

Silver medal winners: 

Badminton men and women

The UCU Kites and Lady Kites were both impressive throughout the badminton challenge but fell to Ndejje University in the final to settle for silver in both categories.

Athletics

(Women)

The Ladies were dominant in the 100×4 relays, 200meters, 100 meters and triple jump despite failing to represent in the 400×4 relays. They won silver.

Scrabble

The scrabble men managed to scratch hard for silver against an experienced Kyambogo University side.

Volleyball

The Lady Doves fought hard against Nkumba in the battle for gold but lost 3 – 0 which set them up against Ndejje University in the quest for silver, they won 3 – 2 to claim silver.

Soccer (women)

Coach Tonny Membe’s side won silver after suffering a 3 – 1 loss to Kampala University before recovering to win 2 – 0 against Kyambogo University and 5 – 0 against Busoga University.

Bronze medal winners: 

Athletics (men)

The UCU track team comprised of 5 headed by Ivan Wesonga needed gold in the 100meters, 200 meters, 100×4 and 400×4 relays to settle for a team bronze.

Karate

The men’s Karate team fell behind Busitema and Ndejje university to settle for bronze in a category where the university was not well represented.

Table Tennis (Men)

The Table tennis team also managed bronze behind Makerere University Business School and Ndejje universities.

Volleyball

They were strong contenders for gold but lost to Kampala International University 3 – 2 in the semi final before recovering to beat Ndejje University 3 – 1 for bronze.

Woodball

The sport that has recently picked up in the university could only manage a men’s bronze behind Bishop Stuart University and the experienced Ndejje University.

Handball

(women)

The women’s handball team also got themselves on the medal stand after the host failed to present a team.

UCU did not only fail to pick up medals in darts, swimming, men’s football, women’s lawn and table tennis, but also failed to present teams for maiden games beach soccer and Mweso.
