A Jackie Nakasi brace was enough to secure the UCU Lady Cardinals a 2-0 win over Buikwe She Red Stars in the Elite Football League on May 19 at the university old football pitch.
The win tightens the Lady Cardinals’ grip on second place and a semifinal place with 27 points.
Tonny Membe’s side used the home advantage to dominate possession and remain calm for most of the game with both goals coming from creative offensive play.
In spite of Captain Maureen Kinavudori’s absence due to injury, Nakasi steered the Lady Cradinals’ frontline with shrewd passing and sneaking through the opponents’ defence to find space, a move that paid off.
“We played well and stuck to our philosophy. I am happy because the team is beginning to bond and play as one instead of playing as individuals. Even without our star players, Kinavudori and Millicent Mwanzi, who are both injured, the girls were simply impressive,” Membe said. “Our target is getting to the final, and to do that we need to keep our players as fit as possible,” he added.
The Lady Cardinals next play Rhines Women on June 11 at Wakiso before concluding at home with London College Nansana on June 19. The semifinals playoffs have tentatively been set for June 23 at Lugogo Stadium.
